Young Mi Cho's first appearance as a soloist was with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten. She went to the U.S. at the  age of 14 to study with renowned artists such as Berl Senofsky at Peabody Conservatory, with Arnold Steinhard at Curtis Institute,  where she was distinguished in Leonid Kogan's master class, and invited to Marlboro Music Festival. After graduating from the  Curtis in 1978, she worked with Oscar Shumsky for a year. Then she went to Hochschule fur Musik in Köln, Germany and completed  Konzert Examen under the guidance of Max Rostal. From her younger years, she won many music competitions. In Korea she won  major competitions including Ehwa Music Competition, Dong-A Ilbo Competition and the May-16 National Competition. In the United  States, she was the first prize winner at the Baltimore Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra competitions. She also won  Munchen ARD competition in piano trio as Cho Trio (formerly Apollo Trio) with her sister and brother. She has played with major  orchestras in Korea. She also played with such major international orchestras as Baltimore symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra,  Santa Barbara Festival, Moskow Chamber, London Mozart Players, Janacek Philharmonic, and Slovakia Sinfonieta. She was  professor at Korea National Conservatory, and since 2000 has been professor of violin at Yonsei University.
